Fatty Acids

Fatty acids are the building blocks of the fat in our bodies. After we eat our digestive system breaks down fats into fatty acids to help get absorbed in the blood where fatty acid molecules joined together in group of three molecules forming ‘triglyceride’. We also get triglyceride from the carbohydrates (bread, rice, potatoes, etc) we eat.

Fatty acids have numerous important functions including energy storage. When we are shortage of glucose (a type of sugar works as body fuel) like when our body is without out of food for a long time (e.g. during fasting), our body struggles for energy supply and fatty acids then come handy to fuel the cells. Also fatty acids are important in cell membrane formation and protein modification.
